About Triumph Steps

Not Everyone Needs Mental Health Treatment, but Everyone Must Have Emotional Literacy.

Triumph Steps® Mission and Vision

Build Emotional Literacy for Real Life

Our world is facing an emotional well-being crisis. Since 1988, antidepressant use has risen by more than 400%, and nearly one in three Americans reports deep dissatisfaction with life. What was once a growing concern has now become a full-blown crisis.

Today, the numbers are undeniable:

  • 122 million Americans live in areas with a shortage of mental health professionals.
  • 36.2% of young adults (ages 18–25) experience mental illness each year.
  • Over 60% of healthcare workers report emotional exhaustion and burnout.
  • By 2037, psychiatry, psychology, and counseling are projected to face critical shortages, even though these are among the fastest-growing professions through 2034.
  • Suicide is now the second leading cause of death, with 2023 marking the highest suicide rate since 1941.

The truth is, this crisis cannot be solved by one-on-one therapy alone. We need early intervention and prevention, not just treatment. That means teaching emotional literacy where people already are, inside schools, universities, agencies, and institutions.

That is why Triumph Steps® was created: a step-by-step emotional literacy program that equips students, professionals, and communities with practical tools to manage stress, build resilience, and live with clarity and purpose.

Why It Matters

  • Suicide is the #2 cause of death for ages 10–34 in the U.S., trailing only unintentional injuries.
  • In 2023, the age-adjusted suicide rate reached 14.7 per 100,000 (49,316 deaths)—higher than 2022’s rate, which CDC had already noted was the highest since 1941—indicating a new 80-year high.
  • Emergency-department visits for suspected suicide attempts among girls ages 12–17 were 50.6% higher in Feb–Mar 2021 than the same period in 2019 (a key, CDC-tracked spike during the pandemic).
  • Depression among U.S. adults is at record levels: 29% report a lifetime diagnosis and 17.8% report current depression or treatment (Gallup, 2023).
  • Depression among adolescents remains substantial: 19.2% of teens ages 12–19 reported depression in the past two weeks; among girls, 26.5%. (NCHS/CDC, 2025, data from Aug 2021–Aug 2023).

Our world is facing an emotional well-being crisis. Since 1988, antidepressant use has risen by more than 400%, and nearly one in three Americans reports deep dissatisfaction with life. We have structured curricula for math, science, and history, but still no universal curriculum for emotional literacy, one of the most essential life skills.

Even in a hyper-connected era, many Americans report loneliness and limited social support, factors that correlate with poorer mental health outcomes.

These numbers are more than statistics. They’re a wake-up call to expand emotional literacy, the skills to regulate emotions, build real-life connection, and strengthen inner resilience.

Triumph Steps® was created to meet that need with practical, teachable tools that help people of all ages connect, self-regulate, and thrive.
